Decide if you want to de-clutter and organize your closets in sections or empty the whole closet in one sorting appointment. 2. You’re going to remove everything, and sort through everything using my TEASER categories. (get your free copy of my TEASER by subscribing to my free newsletter HERE). Not knowing what's in your closet you might not need to use all the categories in the TEASER; however, I have found a garlic press and other things one would not expect to find in a closet that needs to be referred to other rooms in the home. I've found things in pockets that need to be entered into an address book, and stuff in purses that need to be tossed or put into historical storage. 3. Decide what you are really going to keep. CAUTION: DON'T PUT ITEMS BACK IF……It doesn’t fit! …They are out of style! …They have lost their shape! …You haven’t worn it in a year or longer! …The item is itchy, scratchy, uncomfortable, or doesn't fit properly! …You hate the color or print! …You just don't care for it any longer! …It needs ironed. …It needs to be dry-cleaned or washed. Make sure you examine each item, especially the cuffs, collars, and pockets for stains or wear. …It has spots that just won't come out! …It needs to be repaired! …You don’t use it at all! …You can't button, hook, or zip without "sucking in!" …If you have too many of the same item! (How many pairs of black shoes or pants do you REALLY need?) 4. Count how many items of each type of clothing you will be hanging or storing, such as nine pairs of pants, 10 dresses, 10 pairs of shoes, etc. 5. Measure the length of your clothing, such as how long are your dresses, pants, shirts, etc. 6. Now measure the inside of your closet: height, width and depth. 7. Look below to see if there is a closet organizer that meets your needs and price. 8. Install a customized closet, put everything back and relax! | I can tell you a regular standard, not a walk in STUFFED closet, can take me up to 4 hours or more to completely de-clutter and organize. If you’re going to put in a closet organizing system you can expect this to be an almost all day project. If you want to try on everything, you’re going to need extra time for that. You might say, "OK today I’m just going to do all the shirts and the blouses. Tomorrow I’ll do all the pants and the trousers. The next day I’ll do all the skirts, and the next day I’ll do all the dresses." This way you’re not so overwhelmed and you’re getting closer and closer to your goal of getting your closet and clothes organized. |
